The Twin Factors of Transference and Resistance in Davanloo’s ISTDP

2 September 2017 - 3 September 2017

$640.00

Dr John Rathauser will be presenting “The Twin Factors of Transference and Resistance in Davanloo’s Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy” 2 & 3 September 2017 at The Travel Inn, 225 Drummond Street Carlton 3053, 9am to 5pm each day.   $640 (GST incl).

Central to Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) is the stance that the primary factors that influence the permanence of therapeutic change are the degree of the resistance and the extent of the transference component of the resistance.

Dr John Rathauser PhD will present on this topic and show videotapes of sessions to help clinicians understand how to work with the transference and resistance, including with patients experiencing neurotic disorders, functional/psychosomatic disorders and depression.

Dr Rathauser will focus on
– The Central Dynamic Sequence, with focus on the stages of Pressure and Challenge
– Intensification and crystallisation of defenses in the T (transference), with
emphasis on how to “tilt” the process from C to T
– Use of Head-On-Collisions – to create an intrapsychic conflict between the
resistance and the unconscious therapeutic alliance, with intensification
of the R being a prerequisite for an “unlocking” of the unconscious
– Accessing the guilt that sits in the unconscious, which is believed to be the
“engine” that drives masochistic patterns of self-sabotage and defeat, character
pathology, and symptom formation.

Techniques covered will include rapid psychodiagnosis, the identification and removal of resistance, and strategies to facilitate the development of the therapeutic alliance, while monitoring and maintaining a balance between confrontation and acceptance.

John Hans Rathauser, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist with over 35 years of experience.  Following completion of his doctorate in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology – L.A., he spent five years training at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in New York.  In 1994 John Rathauser began training with Habib Davanloo, M.D. in Montreal, Canada, spending eight years in Dr. Davanloo’s Core Training Group.  This training is ongoing, with annual week-long metapsychology conferences, which Dr. Davanloo continues to hold in Montreal.  John Rathauser works in private practice as well as providing presentations on ISTDP nationally and internationally and training in ISTDP to mental health practitioners.
