The 4th International IEDTA Conference was attended by about 320 participants from around the world. Presentations were of very high quality, all augmented by audio-visual highlights of psychotherapy sessions to illustrate the subjects under discussion. This year we achieved a new standard with all audio-visual work being enhanced by subtitling to make it easier to understand the dialog.
The dinner and dancing on Saturday night included a ridiculously funny skit to "say goodbye" to the outgoing IEDTA president, Ferruccio Osimo, and to welcome Allen Kalpin as the new president. The party goers were dressed in all sorts of creative costumes to go along with the conference's fairy tale theme. There were some very creative portrayals of "Princesses and Peas." Lively and enthusiastic dancing went on until late in the night, fueled by the dynamic music of a fantastic klezmer band.
It was a great pleasure to be in the beautiful and historic Danish city of Aarhus, and the conference location was lovely on the university campus beside a lake. We look forward to our 5th International Conference in 2009 which will be in North America. Stay tuned to this website for more information.

Presenters
The following colleagues already accepted the invitation to present :
Fairy tales are stories about supernatural characters such as giants, witches, trolls, dragons, or about animals, poor people, princes and princesses. The setting is mostly an undefined (once upon a) time and place, which nevertheless is often closely related to the society in which the tale was originally told and retold. This is certainly true for the famous fairy tales of the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875). His fairy tales - as most fairy tales do - touch on universal themes. They tell about cruelty and redemption, that comes at a high price or they tell about a transformation. Either a physical transformation (e.g. the frog turns into a handsome prince) or/and a character change of one of the protagonists (e.g. the ugly duckling turns out to have been a swan all along).
Patients, who enter psychotherapy for their complaints and character or personality disorders have become alienated from their own values, thoughts and feelings. Because of their diminished ability to enter or/and maintain constructive intimate relationships with themselves and others they often suffer from loneliness.
The various schools of Experiential Dynamic Therapy do their best to help their patients by stimulating them to end their stoic acceptance of (and sometimes even satisfaction with) their self-destructive defenses, which have become so habitual to them. In the process of establishing a working alliance, the therapist will take care that the patient's ego adaptive capacity is well enough restructured. In this way the process of uncovering traumatic experiences and repressed impulses and painful feelings, and of experiencing them, will go forward without unintended negative consequences.
The measurement and analysis of meaningful change plays a central role in treatment-effect studies.
Most EDT-therapists think it important to monitor their patient's change. Technology like video-recording made it possible to evaluate whether and how meaningful change evolves during the therapy process.
Whether Character Change will remain a Fairy Tale or will have become reality will hopefully become clear at the end of the conference The final say goes to the Conference participant!
