EDT Education and Training

A warm welcome from
Brandon C. Yarns, MD, MS
Chair, IEDTA Education Committee

The IEDTA Education Committee is thrilled to help you begin your journey to receive high-quality education and training in the EDTs!

Whether you are new to the EDTs or an experienced therapist wanting to strengthen your skills, IEDTA-Certified Teachers and Teacher/ Supervisors (who receive these qualifications from the IEDTA Education Committee) can help you learn to facilitate transformations in the lives of your patients including: corrective emotional experiences, profound self-understanding, the ability to make deep and meaningful connections with others, character change, symptom relief, and recovery. You are taught to have ambitious goals for yourself as a therapist and for your patients.

The sine qua non of EDT education and training is the review of video recordings of actual EDT therapy sessions. Video review (of your patient videos or experts’ patient videos) maximizes learning by allowing detailed reflection on every aspect of the therapy process.

How can you get trained?

Reach out to one of the IEDTA-Certified Teachers, Teacher/Supervisors, or Core Training Programs below.

Please note that the IEDTA does not offer training (apart from our biannual International Conference) but certifies independent Core Training Programs, Teachers, and Supervisors who attest to having met criteria established by the IEDTA Education Committee and Board of Directors.

IEDTA-Certified Teachers are qualified to offer invited seminars, workshops, and immersion courses (distinguished by their typical duration: seminars can be as brief as 1-2 hours while immersion courses can last several days) to mental healthcare professionals. These opportunities all include clinical teaching that features video recordings of actual EDT therapy sessions.

IEDTA-Certified Teacher/Supervisors are qualified to offer all of the above and individual or small group supervision for licensed mental healthcare professionals. (Be prepared to bring video recordings of sessions with your patients to supervision!) In addition, IEDTA-Certified Teacher/Supervisors can lead Core Training Programs, the gold standard in EDT training (see below for more information on Core Training).

IEDTA-Certified Core Training Programs are the gold standard in EDT training. Core Training Programs can be virtual, in-person, or a mix of both. They typically last 3 years and include small group meetings that occur a few times per year and last 1-3 days per meeting. You will be presented with comprehensive video-based teaching and provided individual supervision in the context of the group. IEDTA-Certified Core Training Programs must meet rigorous educational requirements set by the IEDTA Education Committee and Board of Directors. Note: Most (but not all) Core Training leaders prefer the applicant to have some knowledge of the EDTs and to have some prior experience receiving video-based EDT supervision before beginning Core Training.
